Ever notice how sometimes you don’t have to search for a topic to write about on your blog – it just seems to finds you?
That happened to me as recent as a few days ago. Blogging is funny that way sometimes.
Now, would you believe me if I told you that this post you’re reading right now is a post I started on Saturday night and finished about an hour or so ago before publishing it?
I wish I was kidding … so why did I do that?
Did I completely forget about publishing a new post after I took the holiday (Labor Day) off? Or was it because I was contemplating on taking this week off as well and then, at the very last minute, decided to write a post?
Well, both of those scenarios are wrong.
You see, I had a completely different post set up and ready to be published today. However, I put the brakes on that topic and choose to write about this one instead.
Because I felt that it was important to get this out.
Not because it’s something that people have been talking about for the past week or so, but mainly because it’s something that everyone will, and hopefully should, have an opinion on.
And I want to share mine.
See, what I’m talking about is various bloggers sharing their own piece of advice and strategy on how to do something.
I’m as guilty as anyone else with this.
I recently wrote a post titled, “7 Effective Strategies You Can Use To Get Quality Traffic To Your Blog Immediately” yet my intentions with that post was to share my own views on what I believed were effective strategies because they worked for me.
But just because they worked for me, doesn’t mean it’ll work for anyone else.
I had to learn this earlier on and I think, these days especially, more and more newbie bloggers are confused. Confused about the large number of advice that’s given. Confused about exactly what advice to follow. Confused about the overall complexities of blogging.
If this is the case then what’s a confused blogger to do?
How To Know Which Bloggers Advice To Follow?
Seems like every where you look, you’re getting told different ways to get traffic or countless opinions on the length of blog posts. And I’ll be the first to admit that with all of that different advice, it can be confusing for everybody – especially new bloggers.
But that’s what makes blogging so great, doesn’t it?
I mean, you can literally take any topic and it can be explained from a thousand different angles by a thousand different bloggers. And each blogger would have their own personal methods of doing it.
Don’t believe me? Hopefully this scenario will provide you with some clarity:
I’m sure you’ve heard of two of the greatest artists of all time, Michelangelo and Picasso. Both are well known artists who’s styles, techniques, colors, etc. completely differ from one another.
You see, Michelangelo would use some unique techniques in his art pieces that Picasso probably would never use and Picasso used techniques that would probably make Michelangelo cringe.
However, both provided some exceptional masterpieces that are extremely valuable.
Now, think about it for a minute, if they both were to give advice to a young artist on how to compose a painting, which technique or advice would that young artist follow? In other words, who’s right?
Hard to tell, isn’t it?
See, the same thing goes for blogging.
If a newbie blogger is looking for advice on a particular blog topic, and they find 20 different bloggers talking about different methods on that topic, who do they listen to?
That’s a situation that’s almost impossible to answer – and that’s exactly why …
Every Blogger Is Right And Every Blogger Is Wrong
I came to that realization, a few days ago, after reading 6 blog posts published the same day by bloggers talking about their strategies to get more subscribers.
They all provided various tips and advice on what worked for them. All the more reason that it’s confusing for readers, at times, on what advice to follow, right?
But it doesn’t matter what advice they end up following because all of those bloggers are right and all of them are wrong. [Tweet This]
To give you a better idea of what I mean, let’s examine just a few of the many points of disagreement many bloggers have.
1. Length Of Blog Posts
One school of thought is that you should write short 300 – 600 word posts because anything longer will quickly cause the readers to lose interest.
Take Seth Godin for instance.
The majority of his blog posts are fairly short … won’t you say?
Now, the “old-school” thinking that some bloggers have is that “if it takes more than 600 words to really get your point across, you’re obviously not doing a good enough job and you’re wasting everyone’s time.”
But … shorter isn’t always better.
Now, the other school of thought is that not only does Google love lengthy posts, but so does the readers. Mainly for the fact that you’re providing them with detailed information they wouldn’t have found elsewhere.
And there’s countless bloggers out there that swear by lengthy posts and how effective they are.
Here’s a perfect example of a long post: Sigh.
Two completely different thoughts on this topic, but who’s right?
My feeling is that if your aim is to help your readers, it doesn’t matter what your length of posts are. They’ll appreciate what you have to say whether it’s 300 words or 3,000+ words.
What’s your views on that?
2. Writing “Epic” Content
This has been a HUGE discussion lately on a few blogs that I read on a weekly basis.
Everybody’s talking about “write epic content.”
But as much as this is a highly talked about topic, there are many bloggers who both agree and disagree with it.
See, you may have some bloggers that’ll say trying to constantly write epic content is basically putting pressure on ourselves. Especially since the blogger isn’t the one that decides which content they publish will be deemed “epic.”
On the other hand, some of the other bloggers will say that they LOVE the idea of writing those “epic” posts because it’s offering something different from the norm. It’s offering something special that the readers aren’t usually use to on a regular basis.
Their belief is that readers will appreciate it because you would have gone out your way to write that content that goes above and beyond their expectations.
Again, two completely different views. So who’s right?
3. Various Ways To Make Money
There are times where I wish I could dare everybody on the Internet to go one whole week without writing a blog post about ways to make money.
Ha. Fat chance of that happening, right?
Regardless, though many bloggers are in agreement with the various ways to make money, the disagreement comes when they’re discussing what the “best” way to make money is.
And usually, it’s the following:
- In one corner, you have bloggers arguing that being a freelancer is the best way to make money because (1) you can usually start right away from the very first day you get online and (2) the more you work, and the harder you work, the greater the reward.
- Then in the next corner, you’ll have bloggers that swear that being an Affiliate is the best way because (1) you don’t have to go through the hassles of creating your own product and (2) you can be an affiliate for multiple products and potentially increase your earnings in no time.
- And in the third corner, you have bloggers saying that creating your own Information Products is the best way to go because (1) you control the product and you can get 100% of the money and (2) it helps to build your own brand and authority.
- Lastly, in the final corner, you have those bloggers that chooses to believe that PPC and CPC and Adsense, and nothing else, is the best way to go.
Four completely different arguments on the “best” way to make money, but if I’m a new blogger, who should I believe?
Who should I listen to?
I mean, as long as you’re making money, does it matter (at that moment) what the “best” way is?
4. How To Stand Out From The Crowd
Listen. There are so many bloggers sharing their different ways to stand out from the crowd, that it’s almost becoming nauseating.
Just look and see the amount of search results I receive when I typed in “Make Your Blog Stand Out From The Crowd.” All those people are writing content about that topic.
But what classifies as standing out from the crowd?
Well, a percentage of bloggers will tell you that the best way to stand out is to write “epic” posts that your readers will love and appreciate.
While another percentage will tell you that the best way to stand out from the crowd is to display your personality.
Then, you’ll have yet another percentage saying that using eye-catching images is the best way to go.
All of these various opinions and the reader is just there saying, “Can you please tell me who to listen to?”
So What Should You Do?
When I say that all bloggers are wrong and all bloggers are right, I’m not saying that for the sake of saying it.
It’s really true.
As bloggers, we have to understand that while we may create great blog content, there are times where our intentions may be misunderstood. Here’s a statement that my buddy, Kevin Duncan said in a post he recently came out with:
“I’ve received questions from readers asking if they have to write long posts in order to be successful. I could almost feel the worry in their words. You see, I inadvertently confused these bloggers when I wrote an 8,317-word post and followed it up the next week with a post titled ‘Be Memorable: Why I wrote an 8,000-word blog post (and why you should do something just as crazy).’ Don’t fall into the trap of thinking there is only one way to be successful”
– Kevin Duncan from Be A Better Blogger.
Because he wrote a lengthy 8,000 word post, some of his loyal readers thought that they had to do the same thing to achieve success on their own blogs. And as bloggers, the last thing that we want to do is imply to the readers that they have to do exactly what we do, or what some bloggers do, to be successful.
As bloggers, we don’t want to mislead or misinform our readers. Sure, we want to provide them with the best advice possible, but we don’t want to make it seem as though that’s the only way to go.
Like I said, the last thing you want to do is confuse your readers and have them thinking that way.
And as readers, we should take the advice that other bloggers are giving to heart, but that doesn’t mean that we have to follow any one particular advice to succeed.
What may work for one blogger may not work for the next, and so on.
This Is What It All Comes Down To …
Blogging should be all about the readers. And realistically what blogging is, is sharing your own thoughts, opinions and advice … to your readers.
There are many posts out there on a wide variety of topics (best plugins, traffic sources, commenting systems, etc) and each blogger has their own opinions on it.
But … that doesn’t mean that Blogger A’s advice is correct nor does it mean that Blogger B’s advice is incorrect. Like I said earlier, all bloggers are wrong and all bloggers are right.
At the end of the day, you just have to try to do what works for you because what works for one, doesn’t always work for another.
